The Star of the Oscar-winning Film 1917 Has a Message for Zlín Film Festival Fans

In 2015, the British actor George MacKay came to Zlin; he was as yet unknown to Czech.  He had already appeared in a number of films though. Yet, it was not until last year when he got to experience what real fame feels like. That was when the director Sam Mendes chose both him and the young Game of Thrones series star Dean-Charles Chapman for his "1917" war epic which has been awarded Golden Globes as well as Oscars.

A Message from the Stars to Festival Fans

British actress Dakota Blue Richards arrived in Zlín in 2008 when she was just 14 years old. As part of the Young Stars concept, she introduced the 2007 fantasy blockbuster film The Golden Compass. A year later at the 49th festival, her next film, The Secret of Moonacre (2008), was featured in the festival. This movie featured the famous Tim Curry, who personally introduced the film in Zlín. These days, audiences can see her every Saturday on CT1 in the detective series Endeavor.

The Magic of Film Tricks

One of the most revolutionary technological inventions of all time is the film camera. From the very beginning of cinematography, the film industry has been trying to come up with new technologies that would not only provide a larger portion of entertainment, but also contribute to artistic impression. Film tricks are as old as film itself and we can hardly imagine a film without visual effects. Audiences consume digital effects in addition to their popcorn and nachos. But who should get credit for them? How do visual effects originate and what is their history?

Director Imogen Thomas about EMU RUNNER: “Emus have a curious nature, which worked to our advantage”

EMU RUNNER tells the story of nine-year-old Indigenous girl, Gem Daniels, who lives in a remote Australian town. As she copes with her mother’s death, Gem finds solace in the company of a wild emu. This heart-warming story plays out against the challenges that come from living in a small and isolated community. “It was a privilege to be there, and to share these people’s lives and their world and this incredible country. I think that is a gift for all of us,” says director Imogen Thomas. That’s probably why it feels like a privilege to welcome this wonderful film to the Zlin Film Festival. You can be sure it will take you to places you’ve never seen before, like… Brewarrina.
