When Children's Stories Cross Borders: Three Inspiring Masterclasses at Zlín Industry Days

31. May 2025

What does it take to create a film for children and youth? Three film professionals from Germany, Canada, and Norway will offer a unique behind-the-scenes look into children's filmmaking and its journey to audiences around the world – all in one inspiring afternoon.

From Berlin to the World: How German Children’s Films Reach International Audiences

Germany has a long-standing tradition of producing high-quality children’s films that combine compelling storytelling with cultural depth and international appeal. In the masterclass Bringing Children’s Stories to Life and On Screen (Saturday, May 31, 15:30–16:30, Congress Centre), Dennis Ruh, Director for the Film and Media Industry, will take participants through the full value chain—from development and financing to international co-productions, distribution, and festival strategy. Drawing on case studies and practical insights, he will outline how German producers and filmmakers leverage institutional support to make their films successful worldwide. For those interested in the mechanics of the European children’s content market, this session offers invaluable guidance.

The Power of Storytelling: Dominic James on Emotion, Character, and Family Entertainment

Why do some films resonate across generations—while others fade into obscurity? Canadian screenwriter and producer Dominic James, founder of Les Productions La Fête, believes the answer lies in strong storytelling and well-developed characters. In his masterclass The Power of Storytelling (Saturday, May 31, 16:30, Congress Centre), he’ll offer an in-depth look at the art of crafting meaningful, inspiring stories that appeal to all ages. Through personal examples and professional insights, James will demonstrate how authenticity and emotion are more powerful than formulas—essential knowledge for anyone working in family-oriented film or series production.

Christian Lo: Why Stories for Young Audiences Matter Most

Acclaimed Norwegian director Christian Lo, known for films like Los Bando, Mini-Zlatan and Uncle Darling, and Rafiki (Bestevenner), will share his personal journey into children’s filmmaking and why he believes stories for young people are the most important stories of all. In this masterclass (Saturday, May 31, 17:00, Congress Centre), Lo will explore what truly makes a great children’s or youth film—from seeing the world through a child’s eyes to working with young actors and building relatable characters. His talk will highlight the need for honesty, empathy, and creativity when making content that connects with the next generation.

These three masterclasses are open exclusively to accredited film professionals and will be held in Czech and English. Together, they form a unique mosaic of insight—combining craft, creativity, and international experience. Most importantly, they serve as a powerful reminder that children’s films are not a “small” genre, but a vital part of our cultural landscape—and a bridge between generations and across borders.
