We have launched a new learning platform for schools

06. November 2024

Schools and educational institutions will now have the opportunity to enrich their teaching with short films that can be found on our Zlín Fest Screen platform. All films are available here for free and are accompanied by methodological and worksheets. For the first time today, pupils of the 3rd grade of the Jinotaj Primary School at the Film Studios were able to experience what a lesson using film looks like.

As part of the preview lesson, the children watched the film Little Cousteau, which focuses on the figure of Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his discoveries, legacy and work. How to work with the film, before and after the screening, how to work with the methodological worksheets for teachers and how to work with worksheets for pupils was presented by the expert lecturer Tereza Nová from Free Cinema, who participated in the preparation of the worksheets for the films.

Czech language, history, art, science and other subjects can now look different in schools. The new VOD platform Zlín Fest Screen starts to offer schools films that serve to make their teaching more attractive and effective.

Their length does not exceed twenty minutes and they are selected to help open up sensitive and difficult topics,

said Markéta Pášmová, artistic director of the Zlín Film Festival, which operates the platform. It is not primarily about teaching film, but about using film as a tool to supplement teaching.

Zlín Fest Screen is exclusively for schools and educational institutions, which will have access to all materials free of charge. Each film is accompanied by the aforementioned methodological sheets for teachers and worksheets for pupils. The offer includes Czech and foreign films and will be continuously updated.

The project is part of a wider festival initiative, which has been set up as part of an international network of children's film festivals supported by the Creative Europe MEDIA programme. As part of the preparations for the launch of the platform, a survey among teachers showed that 96% of the teachers surveyed would like to use films to supplement their teaching. The survey results also showed that most schools are technically equipped to show films.

During the 64th Zlín Film Festival, the Learning with Film project organised demonstration lessons for teachers, simulating 45-minute lessons based on working with short films. These lessons were led by experienced lecturers from the Association for Audiovisual Education and showed teachers how easily and effectively they can incorporate films into their teaching.

We believe that films have a huge potential not only to entertain but also to educate. With the Zlín Fest Screen platform, we want to provide teachers with a tool that will help them diversify and enrich their teaching. It is another step in the festival's long-term effort to connect the world of film with the field of education and to contribute to the development of critical thinking among the young generation,

confirmed Markéta Pášmová.
