Masterclass with Michael Leader: Step into the World of Japanese Anime

Discover the magic of childhood in the films of Studio Ghibli. We invite you to a unique masterclass with Michael Leader, a respected film critic and expert on the works of Studio Ghibli. This inspiring talk will take place on Saturday, May 31 at 6:00 p.m. in the new auditorium of Tomáš Baťa University on Mostní Street.

Michael Leader is a writer, presenter, and lifelong admirer of Studio Ghibli, as well as the co-author of the book Ghibliotheque. He is also the co-creator and co-host of Ghibliotheque, one of the UK’s most prominent film podcasts, designed as an accessible and insightful guide to the world of Japan’s iconic animation studio. Beyond Ghibliotheque, Michael has contributed film critiques to publications such as Sight and Sound and Little White Lies. He previously worked as the lead producer of the video essay series Inside Cinema and Inside Games for BBC iPlayer and currently serves as a curator at the BFI National Archive.
During this masterclass, titled Forever Young: Childhood and Coming of Age in Studio Ghibli Films, Michael Leader will focus on how childhood and adolescence are portrayed in the works of Hayao Miyazaki and his globally celebrated Studio Ghibli. Through an analysis of films such as My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, he will reveal how these stories celebrate the uniqueness and power of youth.
The masterclass is part of the celebration marking the 40th anniversary of Studio Ghibli, which we’re commemorating at the festival through special screenings and discussions. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the world of Japanese anime through the eyes of a leading global expert.
