We Are Very Excited - Electra, a Film We Supported, Is Competing at the Prestigious Cannes Film Festival!

The new Czech student film Electra by Daria Kashcheeva has been a huge success. It was selected by the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival as one of the 16 films that will compete for the Best Student Short Film award this year. In addition, it will be presented in the same country at the Annecy International Animation Festival.  Our joy is all the greater because we were able to financially support the production of the film thanks to the FILMTALENT ZLÍN Foundation. Congratulations!

Interview with the Int’l Expert Jury for the Children’s Category – “Sneakers are better than high heels”

I think the Int’l Expert Jury for Children’s Films would not only get along during a festival, they even could grow old together. I can perfectly imagine directors Johanne Helgeland (THE CROSSING) and Vit Karas, and sales & distribution expert Claudia-Rudolph Hartman run their little bookshop together, as two distinguished ladies and one true gentleman. They would serve tea to the costumers in little cups with a flowery imprint.

Interview with the ECFA Jury - “Underestimated and overpriced”

We present this year’s festival juries to you in a series of interviews, based on a collection of rather random questions. You might hear it about nuns in a nunnery, about girls in a band, about female students in a boarding school. When spending too much time together, a certain symbiosis might take place. Like When Julia Jarl (BUFF festival, Sweden) starts a sentence, Nicola Jones (Golden Sparrow Festival, German) will be able to complete it (and vice versa). Like identical twins. Or like two shining pearls on the ECFA crown. Third jury member Michal Sasek can’t be here due to health reasons.

Interview with the Int’l Expert Jury for Short Animations – “A remarkable amount of badgers”

We present this year’s festival juries to you in a series of interviews, based on a collection of rather random questions. If the answers could be drawings, probably all this would have been easier, but now that it had to be words, it was all a matter of creating order in chaos. With the help of Barbora Prikaska (Czech Republic), Géza M. Toth (Hungary) and Eliza Plocieniak-Alvarez (Poland / Germany) aka the “Animation Jury”.

Interview with the Int’l Jury for Short Animated Films: “Usually there are dragons but not this time”

Interviewing the animation jury is usually fun - animators are often a bit weird by nature, and they talk easily about animals and princes and dragons. Arba Hatashi, Corinne Destombes and Filip Posivac are no exception to this rule. But they also come with an interesting plea; an advice for festival organisers around the world.

3. 6. 2022

Interview with the ECFA Int’l Jury for Documentary Films: “Wine suits my Portuguese personality”

Katerina Hager and Teresa Lima both look nervous and fancy - on a previous occasion Katerina didn’t expect cameras and spotlights and was therefore slightly embarrassed about her casual looks. Now she wears a beautiful necklace (“bought in Sarajevo”) and a dress… but there’s nowhere a camera to be seen.

2. 6. 2022

Interview with the Int’l Expert Jury in the Junior & Youth Category: “I hope the giraffe had a stunt double”

You thought festival juries were like a big mystery; a somewhat cultish bunch of erudite gurus? Or would they be more like simple human beings, doing simple human things? Like running marathons, collecting shoes and living joyless lives? You’ll find it all out through a list of questions we gave to the International Expert Jury in the Junior & Youth Category.

Johannes Schmid about TALES OF FRANZ: “Roaming the neighbourhood alone…”

9-year-old Franz is the smallest kid in his class. On top of that, his voice often lets him down in exciting situations, and all that is left is a squeaky sound. He experiences many adventures, which often call for creative solutions to the everyday problems of growing up. And Franz finds them, often with the help of his two best friends, the self-confident and opinionated Gabi and the fiercely loyal Eberhard.

Ham Tran about MAIKA: “Vietnamese audiences do not care for sci-fi”

Things could be better for 8-year-old Hung, who is grieving the loss of his mother. His relationship with his father is strained, his only friend is moving away, and to top it all off, a greedy landlord is bullying his father. Watching the night sky, suddenly he sees a falling star that lands in the nearby countryside. Investigating the scenery, instead of finding a fallen star, he meets a new friend… MAIKA will spur all your best mood swings, dragging you from lived through drama to hilarious comedy and back, with an extra treat for all Czech audiences...

Frederik Norgaard about MY ROBOT BROTHER: “I wanted people to feel welcome in a warm future”

The new robot Konrad looks and acts completely as if he were human and suddenly Alberte’s popularity spikes as she is now the kid with the most advanced technology at school. But can the connection between Alberte and Konrad hold up to a real friendship?

His dad – and former coach – wants him to accept his disability and keep football from his life, but Dylan is determined to play again. Will Youssef choose to ditch or support him?

The Slovak-Czech JOURNEY TO YOURLAND is a project ambitious in its storytelling and visual approach. Now the Zlin Film Festival is proud to have the animated feature premiering on its opening night. With warm congratulations to director Peter Budinsky and his team.

Lee Ji Won on KIDS ARE FINE: “When the fence is broken, kids can grow up”

Da-yi’s mother is in the hospital. Why exactly? Da-yi doesn’t know, as his father hasn’t told him. In fact, he doesn’t tell him much at all. But when his mother is transferred to another hospital, Da-yi is determined to go and visit her, even if he has to head out on a trip to a far and unknown destination in the company of some new friends and classmates.

TOP MOMENTS OF THE 3RD FESTIVAL DAY

Our festival Saturday was pretty full and busy. In the evening, in the presence of Václav Neckář, we screened the digitally restored fairy tale The Sad Princess, the renewed premiere at the Congress center. ŠKODA AUTO day took care of the fun on náměstí Míru and the sunny weather came out for a concert of the band Buty. At Svoboda castle you could visit tents with the LanCraft game zone and you could talk about esports with streamers spajKK and RedgieBeard. Look at our photo gallery to see how the third day of the festival was like!

Who walked the red carpet on Saturday?

Also today, a number of stars shone on the red carpet in front of the Congress center. The crowds were waiting not only for Václav Neckář, who came to Zlin to present digitally restored version of the film The Sad Princess, but also for Jitka Schneiderová, Jiří Dvořák, Ljuba Krbová or Aňa Geislerová, who also came to Zlín with her sister and daughter.
