They might just need a teacher like Xi Ge to explain the rules of the game and inject them with a passion for playing. Football mania high up in the mountains, setting social dynamics and village routines in motion. Until a disastrous earthquake makes an end to their happy childhood days. Will sports again help them to move forward? We asked director Xu Cheng, who’s YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE takes us up to the high plateaus of Sichuan.

Jim Loach about MEASURE OF A MAN

We had to drag ourselves out of bed very early to catch the light”

Bobby (Blake Cooper), an under-confident, overweight 14-year-old city boy spends a summer by the lake, where a local gang of youngsters finds an easy victim for their bullying in him. In such desperate situations, what help is there to expect from parents or friends? None. Not until Bobby meets Mr. Kahn (Donald Sutherland), a Wall Street veteran and surrogate fatherly presence who mentors the boy through difficult times. The warm sunlight, dimmed by the trees around the lake can be misleading … the idyllic atmosphere contrasts brutally with commonplace small town cruelty.

Interview with the cast & crew of INDIAN HORSE

In the late 1950’s Ontario, eight-year-old Saul Indian Horse is torn from his Ojibway family and committed to one of Canada’s notorious Catholic Residential Schools. In this oppressive environment, Saul is denied the freedom to speak his language or embrace his Indigenous heritage while he witnesses horrendous abuse at the hands of the very people entrusted with his care. Despite this, Saul finds salvation in the favourite Canadian pastime - hockey. He secretly teaches himself to play, developing a unique skill. He seems to see the game in a way no other player can.

Director Shawn Seet about STORM BOY

“When in panic, use a red bucket.” In a contemporary version of the classic Australian tale STORM BOY, Michael - the original Storm Boy from the 1976 feature film of the same name – has grown up to become a retired businessman and grandfather. When remembering his long-forgotten childhood, growing up on an isolated coastline, Michael, to his granddaughter, recounts the story of how, as a boy, he rescued and raised an orphaned pelican, Mr Percival. Storm Boy’s adventures are now re-told in a beautiful film, that is the rightful opener of this year’s Zlin Film Festival.
