The Film Magician Karel Zeman exhibition is located at the Czech embassy in Berlin on 44 Wilhelmstrasse street and is open for viewing nearly the entire period of the Berlinale film festival, from February 12 - 21. It will be open every day from 2pm to 6pm. After February 21 Berliners and visitors to the capital city of the Federal Republic of Germany will be able to admire the exhibition every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, likewise from 2pm to 6pm.
"The exhibition focusing on Karel Zeman is just one part of our presentation at the Berlinale," says Film Festival Zlín's artistic director Petr Koliha on behalf of the exhibition's organizers. He also added that, "we are traditionally under the aegis of the Czech Film Centre as part of the Central European Cinema stand. You can find us on the first floor of the Martin-Gropius-Bau building on Niederkircherstrasse street."
The exhibition Film Magician Karel Zeman has been prepared by Filmfest, s.r.o., the organizer of the International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Zlín as part of a retrospective of Karel Zeman's films. It will be put on display in major cities of the world in cooperation with the Czech Centres, which in many cases have expressed significant interest at the prospect of presenting the exhibition.
"The exhibition was already put on display in the Autumn of 2009 at the Bohemian National Hall in New York City and then at the Hybernia Theatre in Prague," says Irena Skaunicová, production designer of Film Festival Zlín. According to her, further stops of the exhibition are being negotiated with the Czech Centres in Paris, Vienna, Madrid, Seoul, Stockholm, Sofia and others.
The Film Magician Karel Zeman exhibition is made up of 38 1000x700-mm format photos and three large text panels of the same size. The author of the accompanying text on Zeman's productions is film historian PhDr. Pavel Taussig, who has cooperated with Film Festival Zlín on various projects for many years. The exposition maps Zeman's productions at Zlín's film studio from 1945 to 1980. With these black & white photographs we have managed to commemorate Zeman's most famous films - live-action, animated and combined.
Film Festival Zlín has prepared the Film Magician Karel Zeman exhibition for the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Zeman's birth as a prominent part of the supporting program of the upcoming film festival in Zlín. During the winter and spring it will continue its journey to other Czech Centres abroad so that it can return home to Zlín in May 2010 for the Jubilee 50th annual International Film Festival for Children and Youth.
The Czech Centres are state-funded organizations by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. Their mission is to cultivate dialogue with foreign publics in the areas of culture, education, business and tourism. There are currently 24 branches of the Czech Centres in 21 countries on three continents.
