Jewelers of Spain cinematography in Zlin

May 2nd 2009 | Every year our festival spotlights the cinematography of one European country. This year our choice was Spain.

Every year our festival spotlights the cinematography of one European country. This year our choice was Spain. Aside from the series of films from Spain that will be in the competitive section of the festival, there will be an event called Days of Spanish Film. It will be divided into five sections; Spanish films for children, Spanish films for teenagers, Spanish spaghetti westerns, The Best of Spanish Cinematography, and The Barcelona School. More than thirty films will be shown that will map the history of this cinematography. Because our festival is mostly aimed at children and youth, we've even got two sections devoted to it; Spanish Films for Children and Spanish Films for Youth. Among the films in the programme are the exceptional film The Spirit of the Beehive (dir.Víctor Erice), the provocative Barrio (dir. Fernando León de Aranoa) and Carol's Journey, which will be presented by Imanol Uribe. And we're even trying to arrange for a visit by the main protagonist of that film, Clara Lago (who won the Spanish Talent of the Year award in 2008 at the San Sebastian festival). And we've managed to include what is possibly the most successful Spanish children's film of all time for our child public - The Third Children's War (Las locuras de Parchís - dir. Javier Aguirre) from 1982. Another part of the programme is composed of the Spanish Spaghetti Western section, which has been prepared in cooperation with the Instituto Cervantes in Prague. Moviegoers can look forward to delicious tidbits like the Spanish-German co-production The Last of the Mohicans directed by Harald Reinl, which is famous for being an adaptation of the novel by Karl May. Spanish cinematography also had a short period of "new wave" films, which will be presented in The Barcelona School section. A comprehensive review of avant-garde experimental films will be shown in the Czech Republic for the first time. Among them are cult films like Vampir (dir. Pere Portabella), in which play Christopher Lee and Jess Franco, and the debut by Vicente Aranda Left-Handed Fate (Fata/Morgana), which has sometimes been sorted into the sci-fi genre. And of course we can't forget three of the most significant names in Spanish film; Luis Buñuel, Carlos Saura a Pedro Almodóvar. For now we can reveal that the son of the first of the aforementioned legends, Juan Luis Buñuel, will visit Zlín and present the first Czech official screening of the film Robinson Crusoe by his father, which is an original adaptation of the same-named adventure novel.  Further more, you can look forward to an interesting documentary The Last Script: Remembering Luis Buñuel (2008), in which Juan Luis Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière make a pilgrimage to the places connected to the life of Luise Buñuela. And when it comes to Pedro Almodóvar, we'll also be presenting (for the first time on 35mm film in the Czech Republic) his first commercially distributed film Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom (2008), which is strongly carried on the backs of his previous underground films. This is just a fragment, for now, of the rich programme that has been further expanded by some of our confirmed guests.  And from the shop and gallery of Terry Posters there will be an exhibition of Spanish film posters in Czech distribution and another exhibition of portraits of Spanish filmmakers from Instituto Cervantes.
