Zlíns’s Films on HBO

The television channel HBO is broadcasting films that were shown at the 48th International Film Festival for Children and Youth.

One of the festival sections in 2008 was the Days of British Cinematography. Aside from the older gems of British films for children and youth the programme also had some of the newest works. Among them was a film by Douglas Mackinnon, the The Flying Scotsman (2006). It was filmed based on the real life story of Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree, who overwhelmed the international cycling world in 1993 when, as an unemployed amateur from Ayrshire, he broke world hour record on a track thanks to a bicycle of his own original construction.

Because Zlín's festival is dedicated in large part to animated films, that same year we chose The Little Dodo (2008), a feature-length animated film aimed at the littlest of moviegoers, for the non-competitive Panarama section. It was shot in the well-known German animated film studio of Cartoon Film. Dodo, a small orangutan, lives in the deepness of the green rain forest. He loves all the new sounds and activity and is able to imitate almost all of them, from the sound of dripping water to the chirping of cicadas. One day he finds a violin in the rainforest.

The private television station HBO will be showing both of these films with Czech dubbing.

Mary and Max in Czech distribution!

The Australian animated full-length feature Mary and Max enters cinema distribution on July 30, 2009. It had its distribution pre-premiere in June 2009 at the 49th International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Zlín.
After the Zlín festival, viewers have a unique chance to see this unforgettable and original bitter-sweet picture about an extraordinary friendship. Recognized independent animator Adam Elliot shot Mary and Max. He won an Oscar in 2004 for best animated film, Harvie Krumpet. He was inspired by a true story. The movie is geared more towards adult viewers. It's supposed to be screened in its original language with subtitles. Very popular actors provided voices for the main parts. The role of Max was played by Philip Seymour Hoffman (Magnolia, Capote, Doubt), while Australian actress Toni Collette (Muriel's Wedding, The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine) lent her voice talents to create the role of grown-up Mary. Her suitor Damien was played by another Australian, Eric Bana (Hulk, Troy, Munich).
This year Mary and Max saw their premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the USA. It won special recognition in Berlin 2009 in the section of films for youth Generation 14plus, and it won the Cristal Award for best animated full-length feature film at one of the greatest festivals of animated film in Annecy.

Let's refresh our memory about the movie:

This full-length feature with plasticine characters is a simple story about the friendship of pen pals who are very different from one another - Mary Dinkle, a chubby, lonely eight-year-old girl who lives in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max Horovitz, a 44-year-old heavily obese Jewish man with Asperger Syndrome, who lives in chaotic New York City. It follows Mary's path from adolescence to womanhood, and Max's transformation from a man in his prime to an old man. It described a bond that survives more than just the best and worst moments of an ordinary friendship. Mary and Max is a comedy, but at the same time is deeply moving. It takes us on a trip that examines friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism, how children come into this world, obesity, kleptomania, sexual deviations, trust, copulating dogs, religious differences, agoraphobia and many other of life's surprises.

Balcony party 4

Like the whole festival today’s Balcony party was held in the spirit of the Days of Spanish Cinema.
The first guests were the creators of the film of the Latvian-Austrian co-production Little Robbers. The director Armands Zvirbulis and the actors Gustav Vilsons and Martin Vilsons all shortly introduced their film.
The director Juan Luis Buñuel led the following delegation of the document The Last Scrip: Remembering Luis Buñuel which is about the director’s father. The director said that his father never guided nor inspired him in the terms of film-making. He neither bears the burden of being the famous person’s son.
The director and screenwriter Jorge Grau informed the present journalists about his film A Love Story. Grau said that he would not change his former film at all because it looks the way it should had looked in its time of creation. He would rather shoot a new movie.
The film León and Olvido, which was directed by Xaver Bermúdez, describes a relationship between a sister and her brother who suffers from the Down syndrome.
The movie Amateurs is one of the few Spanish films concentrated on the young generation. Manana Rodriguez said that he wrote the screenplay with a girl living in the same house as he.

Preview of photographs - “Mýma očima” (In My View)

Today at 1 p.m. was held a preview of photographs by the Spanish photographer Oscar Fernandéz Orengo called “In My View”.
Originally Orengo wanted to be a film-maker and maybe because of this fact is this exhibition a set of photographs of Spanish and Latin-American directors. He has been working on the project since 2002 and confessed that it is still not finished. He also revealed that in the Czech Republic he would like to take pictures of Věra Chytilová, Jiří Menzel and Jan Švankmajer.
The exhibition hosted the Cultural Attaché for the Spanish Embassy Alvaro Díaz Duque. Mr Duque expressed his happiness with the cooperation with the Zlín Film Festival, because the Czech audience can learn through the Spanish films about the culture of his country.
The managing director of the Cervantes Institute in Prague Pedro Moya Milanés also said couple of words because the institute also participates in the successful cooperation of the Spanish film-makers with the Zlín Film Festival.

Balcony party 3

Both Czech and foreign film delegations appeared at today's party.
Amongst the numerous number of delegations at the party were: the delegates of the Czech film “Ulice: velká trojka” (The Street: The Big Three), the delegation of the Czech film “Kdopak by se vlka bál” (Who is Afraid of the Wolf) and the Canadian-Irish film “Záře duhy” (A Shine of the Rainbow) from the director Vica Sarina. Among these delegations appeared the Swedish film “Sny” (Dreams), the Italian movie “Zápisky” (Diaries) and the Canadian creators introduced the film “Adamova zeď” (Adam’s Wall).
The director of The Street: The Big Three Kryštof Hanzlík and author of the story Michal Reitler came to visit with the children cast of the film. The sibling duo Matyáš and Anna-Marie Valenta introduced the film in which they both star and which is according to its creators a “children’s detective story [meant] for adults”. When they asked Matyáš what mistakes had the director made, the 12-year-old actor said unaffectedly: “I don’t know. I don’t have any reservations about it, yet.”
The director Maria Procházková came with the 9-year-old actress Dorotka Dědková who answered all the questions easily, hence confirmed the words of the director that working with the children is great because of their naturalness and unspoiled character.
The director and screenwriter Vic Sarion also agreed with this. His film A Shine of the Rainbow of the Canadian-Irish co-production is being projected on Friday morning. Vic Saron was born in Kashmir, grew up in Australia and is now living in Canada.
The director Ivica Zubak of Yugoslavian origin spoke about his Swedish film Dreams which compete in the International Competition of Full-Length European Debuts. The film deals with the sorrows of a young man called Goran who is trying to solve his life problems. Should he fulfil the wishes of his dying mother and return to native Croatia or enjoy a single-man life of amusements and pleasure.
The Italian director Attilo Aeola and producer Stefano Renolt gave a short talk on their film Diaries in which three stories gradually merge into one summer adventure. The film received the Grand Prix Ecrans at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

Press conference with Clara Lago and Imanol Uribe

The Spanish actress Clara Lago and the director Imanol Uribe met with the journalists at the press conference at the “Academia Centre”.
The actress spoke not only about her career but also about the film Carol’s Journey which she introduced at the festival with its director Imanol Uribe. She confessed that because of the film she had to cut her hair: “I had waist long hair but the directors preferred shorter ones. Now I have to cut them before every movie,” added the laughing actress. She also revealed that she can’t image doing anything else but acting.
The topic of the Spanish cinematography for children was talked over as well. “In Spain there’s a minimum of children’s movies, only sometimes animated ones,” said the director Uribe. He also touched on the former film censorship during the Francisco Franco’s dictatorship during which they used dabbing to completely change the contents of the film. “The dabbing also bastardised half of the actor’s performance,” both visitors agreed.

“Bob a Bobek” (Bob and Bobby) celebrated 30th birthday at Day of Czech Television

A morning filled with attractions started on the “náměstí Míru” (Main Square). This year the Czech Television thought about the youngest children and dedicated them the whole morning.
People were singing, competing for prizes and celebrating the birthday of the cartoon characters Bob and Bobby. The Czech Television held a spectacular programme for children. During the morning time the children could compete with the Czech actor Martin Dejdar and with Bob and Bobby or sing with the Czech actress and musical singer Lucie Černíková. The talented young singers Markéta Černá and Kristýna Štromajerová also performend there and the famous Czech marionettes “Spejbl and Hurvínek” played a short puppet sketch.
The people not fond of the stage performances had a choice of numerous activities in which they could let off their steam and have a good frolic. The most favourite attraction of the day was clearly the children’s slide from inflatable mattresses; right after that followed jumping on trampolines. Another favourite activity, especially among young boys, was a human table football called “Maxi-football”. The smallest of children were hiding in castle-shaped inflatable mattresses and painting on plaster.
From 2 pm followed the Day of Czech Television for teenagers. The climax of the all-day programme was the live concert of “DĚDA MLÁDEK ILLEGAL BAND” at 8 p.m. at Novesta sports hall.

The opening started the 12th year of the joyful art competition for visually handicapped children. Young artists and their works received plenty of awards. This year’s theme was “An Invitation to a Cinema”.
The presenter of the grand opening and famous Czech actor Jan Čenský introduced the works from 104 children from the Czech Republic and foreign countries. The event took place at the lobby of Tomas Bata University. The kids were happily painting pictures, making merry pottery, cheerfully creating picture collages and afterwards were eagerly awaiting the results. “I don’t know if I win. We will see,” diffidently confessed the young artist Eliška Koldová.
The Czech actress Dana Morávková said that all the children deserved to win and then announced the start of the opening exhibition.
Press conference with Tim Curry and Gabor Csupo

Yesterday at 5:30 pm was held a press conference with the British actor Tim Curry and the Hungarian director Gabor Csupo.
The meeting of these two esteemed celebrities with the press was very relaxed. The creators had both arrived in Zlín to present their film The Secret of Moonacre which has been their first cooperation on a feature film, despite their previous collaboration on animated films. Tim Curry proved his great sense of humour and entertained the press with plenty of witty stories. He said that he thinks of the Czech Republic as a beautiful country with gorgeous untouched landscapes and even likes the Czech language, although he can’t figure out how the Czechs pronounce some of its sounds.
The director Gabor Csupo became famous at the studio Klasky Csupo, Inc., which was the leading animator of the first three seasons of The Simpsons.

Balcony party

At the first Balcony party of this year were presented two movies: English Strawberries from the Czech-Slovakian production and the Canadian film Only. This informal press conference was also visited by the Czech actress Světlana Nálepková.
The director Vladimír Drha, the producer Pavel Melounek and the script editor Kristián Suda all came to present their film English Strawberries. The director Drha mentioned that his aim was to show the time of August 1968 from the point of view of ordinary people. “Do you think that the Russian soldier wanted to be here on 21st August?” “I don’t think so,” he answered himself. The director showed his disappointment with the fact that there is no standard education at Czech schools concerning the modern history of the 20th century.
The movie Only was the second highly discussed piece of work. The director Ingrid Veninger spoke about the film she made in cooperation with the director Simon Reynolds. She stated that the movie is partially inspired by her own life and the boy appearing in the movie is actually her son. In this context Ingid Veninger spoke about the merits of cooperation of the two directors: “At the end of the film my son was supposed to kiss a girl and he didn’t want to do it, because he had a girlfriend and wanted to kiss her first. That was Simon’s turn. He took him aside and explained him certain things and finally we were able to shoot the scene”. To everyone’s surprise the director started to speak in Slovak. She revealed that she was born in Bratislava and afterwards immigrated with her parents to Canada.
The last guest was the Czech actress Světlana Nálepková who said that children are a very critical audience and immediately show their dislike of anything. The actress also plans to visit several movies of the Spanish cinematography.

At 10 o’clock this morning the opening ceremony of the 49th International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Zlín was held in the hall of “Velké kino” (Big cinema). At the building entrance living statues dressed as princes and princesses were greeting the visitors. The cinema was crowded with enthusiastic children; some of which were eagerly waiting with notepads for their favourite’s autograph.
The whole event was presented by actors Jan Čenský and Dana Morávková. Introductory speeches were delivered by the festival Art Director Petr Koliha, by Irena Ondrová, the Mayor of the city Zlín and by the Rector of Tomas Bata University in Zlín Ignác Hoza.
McMuppet

A musical and theatrical play “Kašpárek v rohlíku” (McMuppet) took place at two o’clock in the “náměstí Míru” (Main Square).
A witty play that was based on the fact that the main character called McMuppet didn’t arrive. Hence the protagonists had to entertain the children and even grown-up audience with alternative ways. The spectators saw magic, acted short scenes and mainly they heard several songs. We should mention that all participants were having a great time.
When suddenly in the end a hamburger bun landed on the stage. The bun contained a letter which said that McMuppet was hiding the whole time at the sound engineer’s. At last the performance with funny elements had a happy ending and after a short break a discotheque for children followed.
People who weren’t tempted by music had an opportunity to participate in a pillow fight in large bed and try out a trampoline or inflatable castle-shaped mattresses.

'Cinematrain' - film screening and games

The 'Cinematrain' is back with film screening and has been newly transformed to a game-room.
The 'Cinematrain' has stopped on its annual wanders at the train station in Zlín. This year an additional carriage has been added and serves as a children's room where kids can play with abacuses, blocks, jump on trampoline and paint at little desks. Mr Conductor has an important function - he sharpens pencils, so they're still available.
Traditionally the visitors have an opportunity to watch series of films for children. On the train there is also held an exhibition called 'Historie železnic' (History of railways) where can adults, youth and children explore how the trains and railways looked in the past.

Reserving Tickets On-Line!

For the first time in the festival’s entire history there will be paid tickets for afternoon and evening screenings at this year’s International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Zlín.
For the first time in the festival's entire history there will be paid tickets for afternoon and evening screenings at this year's International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Zlín. The reasons aren't financial, as most visitors think, but rather a matter of regulating things. Huge crowds were recorded within the auditoriums of the cinemas last year; people stood in front of the auditoriums and it was difficult to even get inside. We noted a huge phenomenon called "multiplex tourism", where young people kept going in and out of the theatres. The goal of introducing tickets is to civilize and calm down the traffic between screenings.
From May 25 advanced ticket sales start at Golden Apple Cinema for film projections at Film Festival Zlín 2009. Likewise it's possible to reserve tickets on-line, and not only through the DISdata portal, but also through our Internet pages http://www.zlinfest.cz/cs/predprodej-vstupenek/on-line-prodej. You can reserve tickets through the Internet no later than 30/05/2009 till 12:00 PM and pick them up at ticket desks at Golden Apple Cinema in Zlín. The ticket reservation system will not be available on the Internet from May 31 to June 7!!
From May 31 tickets will be sold at two other locations; at the tickets desks at Velke Kino Cinema and at the festival's Information Centre at Tomas Bata University on Mostní street.
The ticket reservation system will not be available on the Internet from May 31 to June 7. As of May 31 it will be possible to buy tickets at all three ticket sale points for films screened on the day of purchase and one following day.
The admission fee is the same for all charged film projections - CZK 20.
Charged projections start everyday from 2 PM during the entire festival. Morning screenings are reserved in preference for schools and are free. We have introduced a new thing for the littlest of moviegoers - parents with children can come to see morning projections of fairy tales at the Golden Apple Cinema. No admission fee is charged here either. However, viewers have to collect their tickets at the ticket office before they enter. Tickets that have not been taken by groups will be available for free from May 25 at the ticket offices at the Golden Apple Cinema and from May 31 at all three points of sale.
From May 31 there will be a limited number of tickets for the opening film Secret of Moonacre by director Gabor Csupo. Admission to the projections at the Open Air Cinema on the Náměstí Práce Square in front of Hotel Moskva is FREE.

The programme of Film Festival Zlín 2009 is not only filled with feature-length films. The dramaturg has also kept animated film fans in mind and is offering a lot of short animated films for children and adults, as well as a series of feature animated works.

An International Competition of Short Animated Films for Children
We've come up with some innovations for this section this year. The competition is now focused on animated films for children up to 12 years of age. During pre-selection there were nearly 200 films. 65 films from 20 countries of the world will be taking part in the competition. Most representative films have traditionally been from Russia, but our littlest of moviegoers can also watch productions from faraway countries like the United States, Canada and Taiwan. From the Czech Republic we've got representative projects by Czech Television, among them is Finland from the European Pexeso project. You can find these short animated children's films in the programme guide under the name Competitive Animated Films. Series I - V are assigned for the smallest children up to six years of age and the series VI - VIII for children from the age of 7 and up.
Some short animation has also been prepared for older audiences. A series of interesting animation recommended for audiences 15 and older has been stashed away under the name of Non-Competitive Animated Films.

Feature-Length Animation
We have also prepared a series of very interesting films for early evening screenings that have been determined suitable for young audiences. Aside from feature films, there are also two interesting animated feature-length films. One of them is the newest film from Gabor Csupo Immigrants (L.A. Dolce Vita) - a humorous look at the lives of immigrants who have left their native countries bringing with them various lifestyles and traditions that don't quite fit in with the proper pursuit of the American Dream. The other is the Spanish film Animal Crisis - the first feature-length flash animated film. The story is a variation on Orwell's Animal Farm.
We also recommend an original and very funny and touching feature animated film Mary and Max. It tells a story of a letter friendship between an eight-year-old girl Mary from Australia and a Jewish fourty-year-old Max from New York who suffers from Asperger syndrome. Film explores lot of subjects like friendship, autism, taxidermia, psychiatry, alcoholism, how babies are born, obesity, kleptomania, sexual deviations, trust, copulating dogs, religious differencies, agorafobia and many other life surprises. Featuring voices of Toni Collette, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Eric Bana and Barry Humphries. Mary and Max was an opening night film at Sundance Film Festival 2009.
But of course we've also prepared some feature-length animated films for the little ones such as the animated Mexican film Agent Macaw: Shaken & Stirred - a comical animal variation on the most famous of secret agents, James Bond. And from distant Malaysia comes the adventure of three little boys who form the group Budak Lapok, which just also happens to be the name of the film.

Though the Film Festival officially starts on the 31st of May, the favourite fairytale cinema on rails, the Cinematrain, headed out on its journey through Moravian towns on Wednesday May 20th. Attended by of hundreds of children, many well-known fairytale figures and lots of guests, the train was prepared for its journey from the Znojmo train station by the director of the Film Festivalu Zlín Petr Koliha, director of the communications division of Czech Railways Zbyněk Honys and deputy mayor of the town of Znojmo Marián Keremidský.
A part of the celebratory start of the Cinematrain's journey was the christening of the new train car of this fairytale ensemble. It's called the Lil' Train of Toys and within it children can play, draw and even jump on inflatable mattresses. The Lil' Train of Toys was christened by children's favourite fairytale prince Jan Čenský, who wished it many happy visitors and a smooth journey to Zlín's festival.
And they didn't forget to put on the first screenings of the bedtime story films for children from Znojmo's kindergartens, nor to sing happy songs and hand out presents.
The Cinematrain will be stopping at fourteen towns on its journey, offering children hundreds of animated films. It will finish its festival journey on the 7th of June in Horní Lideč.

The European debuts competition has been a part of Zlín's film festival for several years. In this section audiences get to watch ten films from various parts of Europe. The first films, mostly from young directors, bring a fresh and often novel look at reality and give the rest of the festival sections more character. This year in this particular competitive category we're not only introducing films that have stirred up positive reactions at top film festivals in Europe (Venice, Berlinale), but also films that have been hitherto unknown.
For now we'd like to bring your attention to these films: The film Pa-ra-da (Italy, Romania, France 2008), from Italian director and successful cameraman Marco Potencorvo, tells the riveting story about a real entertainer named Miloud Oukili, who comes to Bucharest in Romania and soon gets involved in saving many children living in horrifying conditions. The phenomenon of children's gangs living mainly underground and in temporary shelters around Bucharest's main train station was also the theme of the documentary Children Underground (directed by Edet Belzberg, Romania 2001). The film by Marco Potencorvo was successfully screened at the festival in Venice.
The debut by the young director Esther Rots Can Go Through Skin (Kan door huid heen, Netherlands 2009) is an intimate confession of a young heroine who lived through a traumatising experience of being attacked and then tries to make sense of her life again alone in a house in a village. The film was shown at this year's Berlinale film festival in the Forum section, where it caused a very positive response.
The film Diaries (Diari, Italy 2008) by director Attilio Azzola combines three stories into one summer adventure for a group of young people. It's a real Italian film about one summer that has been permanently marked in the lives of the main characters. The film won the Grand Prix Ecrans Juniors prize at the Cannes film festival in 2008.
The French film Ain't Scared (Regarde-moi, France 2007) by the young director Audrey Estrougo is an authentically composed picture of a group of young people living in a multicultural society in a ghetto on the outskirts of Paris called "La Cité" and "La Banlieue". With a lack of anything else entertaining to do, this multiethnic group of young people spends a great deal of their time together and is viewed as a hierarchical group of male and female characters. The film fits within a series of similar films dealing with this topic (The Hate/La haine 1995, directed by Mathieu Kassovitz and Games of Love and Chance/L'Esquive 2003, directed by Abdel Kechiche), but because of they way its presented, it's a more forgiving picture of a very problematic phenomenon.
In connection to the Spanish Days of European Cinematography that we've already informed you about, the European Debuts competition will present the Spanish film Amateurs (Amateurs, Spain 2008) by director Gabriel Velázquez. It's the story of a young girl named Blanca, desperately looking for her true father, who is finally taken in by an old man. He, like the main heroine, is yearning for company. This is a film about the search for mutual understanding on a journey from France to Spain. The main role of the young girl Blanca is played by Emilie de Preissac, who also played in the film Ain't Scared (but with very short hair).

Jewelers of Spain cinematography in Zlin

Every year our festival spotlights the cinematography of one European country. This year our choice was Spain.
Every year our festival spotlights the cinematography of one European country. This year our choice was Spain. Aside from the series of films from Spain that will be in the competitive section of the festival, there will be an event called Days of Spanish Film. It will be divided into five sections; Spanish films for children, Spanish films for teenagers, Spanish spaghetti westerns, The Best of Spanish Cinematography, and The Barcelona School. More than thirty films will be shown that will map the history of this cinematography. Because our festival is mostly aimed at children and youth, we've even got two sections devoted to it; Spanish Films for Children and Spanish Films for Youth. Among the films in the programme are the exceptional film The Spirit of the Beehive (dir.Víctor Erice), the provocative Barrio (dir. Fernando León de Aranoa) and Carol's Journey, which will be presented by Imanol Uribe. And we're even trying to arrange for a visit by the main protagonist of that film, Clara Lago (who won the Spanish Talent of the Year award in 2008 at the San Sebastian festival). And we've managed to include what is possibly the most successful Spanish children's film of all time for our child public - The Third Children's War (Las locuras de Parchís - dir. Javier Aguirre) from 1982. Another part of the programme is composed of the Spanish Spaghetti Western section, which has been prepared in cooperation with the Instituto Cervantes in Prague. Moviegoers can look forward to delicious tidbits like the Spanish-German co-production The Last of the Mohicans directed by Harald Reinl, which is famous for being an adaptation of the novel by Karl May. Spanish cinematography also had a short period of "new wave" films, which will be presented in The Barcelona School section. A comprehensive review of avant-garde experimental films will be shown in the Czech Republic for the first time. Among them are cult films like Vampir (dir. Pere Portabella), in which play Christopher Lee and Jess Franco, and the debut by Vicente Aranda Left-Handed Fate (Fata/Morgana), which has sometimes been sorted into the sci-fi genre. And of course we can't forget three of the most significant names in Spanish film; Luis Buñuel, Carlos Saura a Pedro Almodóvar. For now we can reveal that the son of the first of the aforementioned legends, Juan Luis Buñuel, will visit Zlín and present the first Czech official screening of the film Robinson Crusoe by his father, which is an original adaptation of the same-named adventure novel. Further more, you can look forward to an interesting documentary The Last Script: Remembering Luis Buñuel (2008), in which Juan Luis Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière make a pilgrimage to the places connected to the life of Luise Buñuela. And when it comes to Pedro Almodóvar, we'll also be presenting (for the first time on 35mm film in the Czech Republic) his first commercially distributed film Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom (2008), which is strongly carried on the backs of his previous underground films. This is just a fragment, for now, of the rich programme that has been further expanded by some of our confirmed guests. And from the shop and gallery of Terry Posters there will be an exhibition of Spanish film posters in Czech distribution and another exhibition of portraits of Spanish filmmakers from Instituto Cervantes.

The young Colorado-native and actress AnnaSophia Robb is coming here from the United States of America.
This young girl with the blue-green eyes has dedicated herself to song and dance since childhood, and her film career started five years ago, when she was 9 years old.
A Czech Anniversary Connected with Zlín

This year’s festival brings to mind the anniversary of filmmakers and actors whose work is partially connected with Zlín’s studios or who are native-born Zlíners.

Just as in past years, we'll again be celebrating several names from the world of film. All of this year's celebrants have some connection with Zlín. Josef Abrhám (70), Bolek Polívka (60) and Pavel Zedníček (60) were born in Zlín, and Jiří Schmitzer (60) shot films in Zlín. Big Beat (Šakalí léta), Cosy Dens (Pelíšky), Lotrando and Zubejda and Outsider are a few of the films connected with them.
Among those who would have celebrated some significant birthdays this year are a music composer of Bulgarian origin, Angelo Michajlov (70), who wrote the music for a whole series films, and not just for Zlín's film studios - Thirty Maids and Pythagoras (Třicet panen a Pythagoras), The Girl on the Broomstick (Dívka na koštěti) and Lucy, Terror of the Streets (Lucie, postrach ulice). And also Vladimír Menšík, who would have celebrated his eightieth birthday this year, who shot On the Comet (Na kometě) in Zlín with Karel Zeman. Perhaps the one most connected with Zlín was Josef Pinkava - director and screenwriter of children's films like Metráček, I Wouldn't Leave Tereza for Any Other Girl (Terezu bych kvůli žádné holce neopustil), Kopretiny pro zámeckou paní and Chlapi přece nepláčou. He would have turned 90 this year.
The last personality that we'll bring up who is connected with Zlín is Karel Höger. In June 100 years will have passed since his birth and there isn't anyone who wouldn't recognise his stories About A Dog and a Cat (O Pejskovi a kočičce) or Rumcajs.
New Headings for the Night Horizons section

This year we will be continuing the new item from last year’s festival – the Night Horizons section. Evening projections will offer audiences controversial topics and a less traditional look at child and teen heroes.

Of the fourteen films from all over the world that this section will contain this year, we will reveal just three titles:
European cinematography will offer the films Let The Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in, Sweden 2008, directed by Tomas Alfredson) and Seven Days Sunday (Sieben Tage Sonntag, Germany 2007, directed by Niels Laupert). The first of these films is an adaptation of a very successful horror novel by John Ajvide Lindquvist that tells a minimalist visual story about a special relationship between two child protagonists that gradually find a special place in the adult world in a Swedish neighbourhood. The film respects the vampire genre, but in places also offers a fascinating look at a child's world - let it enter your dreams. The second film presents a realistic line in young German film. Based on a true story, it offers a look at two young protagonists living in the bleak environment of a German suburb who are futilely trying to make some sense out of their own existence. This artfully measured tale cannot end in anything but a tragedy that hovers over the stunned heads of official power like an unspoken protest.

American film will be represented by the film American Son (2008, directed by Neil Abramson), which captures the last 96 hours of a young black man before he ships out for the war in Iraq. This real drama is formed by the experiences of many American soldiers who had to face not only painful good-byes with their closest ones, but also their fear of the unknown into which they are hurtling. The film premiered in 2008 at the Sundance Film Festival. The introduces the young pair Nick Cannon and Melonie Diaz (Be Kind Rewind) and the well-known Hollywood actor Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan, Bringing Out the Dead).

Later that day, Miroslav Göttlich negotiated his cooperation with Film School Zlín, where he would teach Figurative Drawing to future animators. Just like in previous years, the proceeds from the auction will go in support of their graduation film projects.

The Rainbow Marble Awaits Big Changes

The Rainbow Marble advertising competition will be taking place for the seventh time this year during Zlín’s 49th Annual International Film Festival for Children and Youth.
The new Rainbow Marble web site was launched on the 2nd of February at the same-named address www.duhovakulicka.cz. Visitors can find news pertaining to the Rainbow Marble, pages on current topics from the world of marketing and advertising and also assorted interviews. One new item is the on-line registration for competitive entries. The main piece of news for this year's Rainbow Marble is the concept change of the whole competition. Organizers have changed the main topic of the conference to the area of advertising etiquette and the responsibility of advertising designers. "The current European trend has moved in this direction. We've decided to make the Rainbow Marble and International Festival of Responsible Advertising, because we consider it to be a key responsibility in commercial communications." explains project manager Nela Fišerová for the changes. This is why Rada Pro Reklamu has become a partner of the competition. One of the sections of the Rainbow Marble is the expert conference dealing with the area of education in media for both communications professionals and pedagogical workers. Foreign and domestic experts will educate attendants on the newest trends in this field. "We think that an education in media literacy is the best way to aid us in not being just consuming and easily influenced viewers of advertising. Attendants of all age categories must learn to better discern the quality and intent of the media copy they come across, and in our opinion an education in media is the best way to accomplish this." says Fišerová. The organizers hope that they will manage to contribute to an increased awareness of commercial and non-commercial communications within the expert and general public, and that it will result in a better media environment. The competitive categories have also met some changes. Rainbow Marble statuettes will be awarded to those competitors who have submitted the best advertising in the categories of television spots, press advertising, new media and direct mail. The magazine Strategie is the Rainbow Marble's main media partner. An international jury will choose the winners in each category. The Rainbow Marble - International Festival of Responsible Advertising will take place within the International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Zlín se films can be scene by viewers in the sections Panorama, Documentary Films, the popular Night Horizons and, of course, in the competitive category. The main theme connected with this year's festival is the Days of Spanish Cinematography, which will involve not only film, but also an accompanying programme.
